The Dotted Line

The Dotted Line – Copyright D.Dagenais
On the day that she broke her finger
He called her up and said
“Would you like to get ahead in line?
All you gotta do is be mine.
Not in the ordinary Josephine, Napolean
Cyrano and Roxanne, Romeo and Juliette way
I have something else in mind...
You can be my sex slave
I’ll make sure that you get paid
I’ve got the connections, you got no direction
I’ll be Henry Higgins, you can be Eliza
Except for the part where I’ll always despise ya.
Sign on the dotted line”
On the day when she broke her high heel
He picked her up and brushed her off while he copped a feel
Cause this was all part of the deal
It’s an ordinary overnight sensation story
Cinderella at the ball
Those shoes are gonna make you fall
But you can have it all
You can be my sex slave
I’ll make sure that you get paid
I’ve got the connections, you got no direction
I’ll be Henry Higgins, you can be Eliza
Except for the fact that I’ll always despise ya.
Sign on the dotted line.
She’s picking up the pieces of her shattered shoes
The rain in the plains only makes her blue
Standing at the crossroads looking for a man
Wearing a black hat and she’ll find him if she can
Sign on the dotted line
You can be my sex slave
I’ll make sure that you get paid
I’ve got the connections, you’ve got no direction
I’ll be Henry Higgins, you can be Eliza
Except for the part where I’ll always despise ya.
Sign on the dotted line

Charity

Charity (Copyright D.Dagenais)
I knew Charity well
When she was in pigtails and hand-me-down shoes
She use to laugh a lot
In her second hand coat
With the pockets she used
To keep lost gloves
In case your hands were cold
And scraps of paper like gold
Cause you might want to write a friend
And tell them you miss them
I knew Charity well
When she wore a dress that was slightly too big
Hem only tacked with safety pins
But she’d remove them
If you had needed one
It would drag in the puddles
But dry in the sun
She’d say it was worth the ruin
To save someone
Oh Charity I remember well
You gave me your last ribbon
And your braids fell
I knew charity well
In the couple miles we walked to school
She would share her lunch with me
From a brown paper bag
We would save to use
To make a bright kite
We would fly over head
Rough string that burned the palms of our hands
What I’d give to feel that again
When I knew Charity
Oh Charity how it would sail
You gave me your last ribbon
To make the tail
I knew Charity well
When she was green and still untried
How she looked with her hair untied
Streaming in the breeze
Charity

Mona (Copyright D.Dagenais 2011)
When she was seven
Mona went to heaven
It seemed a long way to go
And who would she know
To recommend the restraunts
And the shows
So she came back in a flash of light
To have another try
In a flash of light
It’s a dogs life
A dogs life
Mona
Blankets on her favourite chair
She’s out and running everywhere
And the park smells good
The park smells good today
She’s shaken off all the fleas
She hasn’t anyone to please
This is heaven
This is heaven
Mona
She’s younger than she’s ever been
Now that she knows how to swim
This is heaven
This is heaven

FOUR
You grow up
you get tall
you get up
you get out
face the traffic and the noise
you're not a little girl or boy
except the inside where it counts
You stand up
you fall down
you crawl apon the ground
until you find some way to be
part of the great big world you see
are you terrified like me?
Cause we're all four behind closed doors
Four
You get paid
you get laid
you give somebody pain
and then you take some of your own
you know what it's like to be alone
you make a family and home
you get old
you get tired
you're no longer inspired
and you take it out on them
those that you have called your best friends
you know that you should make amends
Cause we're all four behind closed doors
Four
And when you find it's not enough to be safe
you go out and find a heart to break
and you mess it up like fingerpaint
you lose
you get lost
you pay a heavy cost
for ever growing up,
without ever growing up
and you throw years out like paper cups
You get bent
you get spent
you haven't got a red cent
left to call your own
remember what it is to be alone
then you find your way back home
we're all four behind closed doors
Four

The only Busker on John Street (copyright D.Dagenais 2010)
Red glare, red paper, lights
White snow turning grey as the wind bites
The man on the corner with his hat in his hand
Here’s a penny for a beggar with his eyes downcast
I can not compete, with these city streets
I can not compete with these city streets
A woman rushes by with two kids in tow
Holes in the coats and runny noses
She catches my eye and I nod ‘cause I know
She’s trying to reach the food bank before it closes
I can not compete, with these city streets
I can not compete with these city streets
I am the only busker on John Street
I am the only busker on John Street
The padre’s handing tracts out
The junkies say they have their own
The homeless are scavaging for temporary homes
‘Cause that big grey sky looks like it’s gonna storm
Subway grates and doorways
Anywhere that’s warm
I can not compete, with these city streets
I can not compete with these city streets
I am the only busker on John Street
I am the only busker on John Street
I gather up my nickels and I throw them in the hat
And the man looks at me like I am crazy to do that
But he’s been here as long as me
And I have somewhere else to be
But he doesn’t …no he doesn’t
I am the only busker on John Street
I am the only busker on John Street
I am the only busker on John Street
I am the only busker on John Street
And I can not compete with these city streets.

Easy (D. Dagenais copyright 2010)
It’s so easy, loving you
Like the sun and the rain
It comes on it’s own
It’s so easy, holding you
Like the sand holds the wave
The grass holds the dew
It’s so easy to fall
My friend
Catch me if you can
I’ll make it easy for you
It’s so easy the way we talk
Like mockingbirds long after dark
It’s so easy, the way you know
Like the waxing moon knows the ocean’s flow
It’s so easy to fall
My friend
Catch me if you can
I’ll make it easy for you
There’s enough to struggle with
Every day we live
Love should be easy to give
Cause it’s so easy to say goodnight
When your eyes are the first I’ll see at light
It’s so easy, just to know
Your love follows everywhere I go
It’s so easy to fall
My friend
Catch me if you can
I’ll make it easy for you

Galileo Dreams

Galileo Dreams (copyright D.Dagenais 2011)
I can believe the world is round
And some of the oceans are upside down
When everything comes
Pouring out of me
I can believe the suns
At the centre of the universe
Through I feel a little worse
Cause it makes me
Small, unimportant and unseen
Chorus:
But you made the earth stop
So I could step off the
Edge of a flat earth
The centre of my universe
Till you had Galileo Dreams
Galileo Dreams
I can believe the whole earth spins
Cause I get so dizzy now and again
Everything goes flying by so fast
I can believe it’s all on a slant
Cause I always am a little off balance
Listing left to right and back
Chorus
Sometimes it’s not the things you say
That makes you world change that way
You see things in a different way
Is it reality? Or some new theory
I can believe in gravity
Cause I feel it all pressing down on me
Holding me in and holding me back
You can believe anything you want
If it makes it easier to get along
I just can’t be this far off track
Chorus

Somebody's Daughter

Somebody’s Daughter ( Copyright D.Dagenais 2010)
It was late, the plane delayed
I grabbed the car and drove away
It was a stormy night in Truro
And it had been a bad day
It had been a bad day
She didn’t say where she was going
She didn’t say where she’d been
I picked her up in the east lane
Where she was hitching in the rain
She was hitching in the rain
She said...
Sometimes I feel like I could disappear
And sometimes I wish that I would
I know it’s not safe to be standing out here
In this kind of bad neighbourhood
So if you don’t mind the company
Take me as far as you’re going
This jacket has holes in its sleeves
And it looks like it’s gonna be snowing
So we talked about the weather
She didn’t tell me her name
But I recognized her face
When the newspaper came
When the newspaper came
She was somebody’s daughter
She could have been somebody’s wife
And I let her out at the off ramp
The last night of her life
The last night of her life.

300 Channels (copyright D.Dagenais 2010)
There’s a river of red mud
Running through the Danube
It’s gonna poison everything
But what’s it matter if the Eiffel Tower is standing
And the Statue of Liberty still gleams
As long as we have
Tourist traps and gasoline
We have everything we need
It doesn’t matter if the
Fish we cannot eat
We can grab a burger
At the Dairy Queen
Oh be thankful for
The corporations’ plastic cards
300 channels turning little people into stars
And stars into God
And God into mythology
For little people like me
There’s a river of red greed
Running through the heart and veins
It’s gonna poison everything
But whats it matter if the bottom line is solid
And Midas touches the revenue streams
As long as we have
Swag and souvenirs
We have everything we need
It doesn’t matter if the music that we hear
Is a beating pulse or a dying scream
Oh be thankful for
The corporations’ plastic cards
300 channels turning little cowards into czars
And czars into God
And God into mythology
For little people like me
I believe that things change
If we get off this pre-arranged
Diet of empty things
Wouldn’t it be nice to be thinking again?
Oh be thankful for
The corporations’ plastic cards
300 channels turning little people into stars
And stars into God
And God into mythology
For little people like me

I Do (Copyright D.Dagenais 2011)
Can you breathe, when I leave?
is it easy to live without me ?
do you dream?
Can you sleep?
do you wonder where i might be?
cause i Do
I do
Do you wake up at 6am
thinking about the past?
Do you come to understand
how nothing ever lasts?
cause I do
I do
Do you lie there awake
count the cracks on the ceiling?
Do you lie to your mates
when they ask how you've been feeling?
cause I do
I do
Do you sleep alone
and wake up the same way?
Do you check the phone
a thousand times a day?
Cause I do
I do
